Thesis Summary:
I am most interested in the way that humans interact with and perceive their physical
environment, which relates to the concept of sense of place. Given that the role of the physical
environment is largely absent in sense of place literature (Stedman, 2003), I plan to conduct an
exploratory study examining the concept of sense of place and its’ association with
environmental stress and coping theory in northeast Hamilton. According to environmental stress
and coping theory, when faced with environmental stress, individuals evaluate the issue and react
by employing one of two coping methods: problem-focused or active coping (taking actions to
mitigate the impacts of the stressor) or emotion-focused coping (regulating one’s emotional
response to the stressor) (Baum et al., 1982; Elliott et al., 007; Wakefield et al., 2001). The goal
of the project is to determine if sense of place is related to appraisals of environmental stress (air
pollution) that result in one of two coping strategies (active or emotion-focused), and if this
association is dependent on immigrant status.
