Thesis Summary:
Abstract:The Quaternary geologic history of the Simcoe County area has been described by several authors, however much of the work was completed prior to major advances in both understanding of glacial processes and modern computational techniques. The present research provides valuable insights into the evolution of late Wisconsin paleoenvironments, based on detailed field-based mapping and sedimentological investigations. The aim of this thesis is to better characterize the deglacial history of the Lake Simcoe area, north of the Oak Ridges Moraine, with a focus on improved mapping of features from glacial lakes Schomberg and Algonquin and understanding the link between these two lake bodies. Standard sedimentological logging techniques will be applied to fully-cored boreholes drilled by the Ontario Geological Survey during the summers of 2011 and 2012, as well as natural exposures along riverbanks, where sediment exposures can reach up to 25m. Architectural Element Analysis can be applied to these vertical sediment profile data in order to better constrain the depositional processes at work and 3-D geometry of the sediment units which has important applications for subsurface reservoir mapping and source water protection plans.
