In 2004 skeletal human remains of a young woman were discovered in a shallow grave near Mammoth Lakes, California. Forensic studies showed that she had been stabbed in the chest. The detective handing the case sought my hep to identify the victim. Using isotopic analyses of hair, bones and teeth, I was able to show that the victim was a native North American, probably from Mexico or Guatemala, who had been born in California, grew to maturity in southern Mexico, and returned to California just before she was murdered. The assailant has not yet been found.
