Fieldwork Opportunites

The School of Geography and Earth Sciences is committed to increasing the opportunities for experiential (‘hands-on’) learning by undergraduate students. Many of our undergraduate courses involve fieldwork in the local area and we have several courses that undertake field research in off-campus locations.

First year courses: Envir Sc 1G03 - geological and environmental fieldwork in the Hamilton region. Half day fieldtrip. Bus transportation.

Geog 1HB3 - The purpose of this course is to provide an introduction to the theories, methods, and patterns of human geography, and in particular urban economic geography.

Second year courses: Earth Sc/Envir Sc 2E03 - geological fieldwork along local rock outcrops of the Niagara Escarpment. Stratigraphic logging and correlation of sections. 3 hour fieldtrip. Group assignment. Optional full day trip to the Niagara Gorge held one Saturday in September - winery tour included!

Earth Sc/Envir Sc 2G03 - This course will provide students an opportunity to examine the dynamic processes that shape the earth’s landscape and the landforms that result from these processes.

Third year courses:

Earth Sc 3FE3 - Field camp. A two week field camp held in the Hamilton region and in the Sudbury/Whitefish Falls area of Ontario. Bus transportation, accommodation in motels/cabins. Geologic mapping, etc. One of the best experiences ever!!

Earth Sc/Envir Sc 3E03 - Sedimentological logging of deltaic and glacial deposits along the Scarborough Bluffs. Full day trip.
Investigation of Paleozoic fossils and depositional environments at Port Colborne. Half day trip.

Geog 3ME3 - Environmental Studies/Science Field Course - Within the context of a field project, this field camp introduces students to field techniques in environmental science and to the potential effects of environmental issues on human health and well-being.

The field camp component occurs outside of the regular academic term, usually two weeks preceding the start of term in September.  Details and applications are available in January through the School of Geography and Earth Sciences.

Geog 3MF3 - Field Study in Human Geography -

Introduction to field research in Human Geography. Most of this course occurs outside the regular academic term, usually in one of the two weeks prior to the start of term in September.  Details and applications are available in March.

Earth Sc 3V03 - Try your hand at Ground Penetrating Radar, shallow seismic and magnetic surveys! Weekly/biweekly labs provide students with practical experiences dealing with a variety of geophysical equipment used in environmental applications.

Fourth year courses:

Earth Sc 4E03 - A 4 day field trip to Martha's Vineyard, MA allows students to experience field techniques used in coastal geological research. Marsh and beach systems and their geological evolution are the focus of the field trip. Come and experience New England at its best!

Earth Sc 4FE3 - Detailed study of a particular aspect of physical geography, earth sciences or environmental science in the field. Held immediately after the end of Level III or prior to Fall registration in Level IV; report to be submitted before the end of first term.

Earth Sc 4FF3 - Geoarchaeological Research Trips Field course to San Salvador Island Bahamas 2010-11.
The trips generally involve underwater excavation of ancient harbors and the study of coastal evolution during the Holocene. Students are taught field methods used in coastal geoarchaeology and then participate in projects conducting primary research. Students are required to have a valid SCUBA certification and cover all costs associated with travel. Location and duration of the project varies from year to year, contact Dr. Reinhardt for further details.

GEog 4MF3 Field Research in Human Environment - Selected topics in field research in human geography and environmental studies. Topics may vary from year to year, and the timing of the course will depend on the offerings. 2012 New York, New York
