General Information

Located in the Arthur N. Bourne (ABB) building the McMaster University Glassblowing Shop has been in operation for over 53 years. The current scientific glassblower, Michael Palme, has been serving the McMaster University scientific community for the past 27 years. The primary duty of the scientific glassblower is to provide glassblowing services to the Faculties of Science, and Engineering and Health Sciences on campus. The services provided by the Glassblowing Shop allow research personnel  to procure custom scientific glassware on campus, which serves to significantly further their research programs. Whenever possible, glassblowing services are provided within the Glassblowing Shop area, although at times it is necessary to repair or construct apparatus in various laboratories on campus.

More recently glassblowing services have also been made available to the community outside of McMaster University. We welcome the opportunity to fulfill the glassware needs of external clients. Please contact us for a quotation.

Glassware such as condensers, dewars, traps, and vacuum lines, is produced to meet the specifications of the requesting party. We have the ability to construct custom scientific glassware up to 178mm in diameter from borosilicate glass and 70 mm in diameter for quartz glass. We also have the ability to construct glassware made from aluminosilicate glass.

Besides fabrication of scientific glassware, the shop has facilities for cutting, drilling, and grinding glassware and ceramics such as alumina and mullite. Mullite ceramic  to borosilicate glass seals can also be fabricated on site. If you would like a quote on the fabrication of some glassware please send a diagram, by fax or e-mail. Contact information can be found by following the "Contact us" link found in the website menu. The e-mail should have a brief description of the article requested, and quantity, and should contain a file attachment with a drawing of the article. The file attachment (drawing) should be in jpeg, gif or pdf file format.

Components such as ground joints, stopcocks, borosilicate and quartz tubing can also be purchased from the Glassblowing Shop. A complete listing of the glassware components that we stock and offer for sale can be found in the "Components Catalogue".
