Welcome

Welcome high school chemistry teachers! The Department of Chemistry & Chemical Biology invites you to participate in our Community of Chemistry Teachers meetings. These meetings bring high school teachers and faculty members in the department together to discuss transition issues and curriculum revision, to share ideas and resources, and to enjoy presentations on topics of mutual interest as we attempt to build a community of chemistry teachers. This year’s meeting will be held on Wednesday, February 8, 2012 from 4:30 - 6:00 p.m. Please refer to the links above for details and registration information. Refreshments will be served!

The department of Chemistry & Chemical Biology has developed a series of video tutorials and podcasts to give students a further understanding of principles covered in 1st year chemistry courses. Please feel free to view them and share them with your students. We hope that they will be a useful learning tool to support high school chemistry classes.

We invite you to bring your class or group of interested students to the Engineering and Science Olympics on Thursday, October 6, 2011. Enter a team of students in the Chemical Forensics Competition or bring your entire class to Dr. Randall Dumont’s presentation, “COOl CHem CaBaReT”,” which is sure to be an eye-popping (and occasionally ear-popping) experience.

Our annual Magic of Molecules Public Show in celebration of National Chemistry Week will take place on Saturday, October 22, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. Children and adults alike will enjoy this lively and engaging demonstration of Chemistry featuring flashes, bangs, dancing metals and colourful reactions.

We hope you will bring your grade 11 and grade 12 chemistry classes to Physical Sciences@Mac Activites held in December and April during our exam periods. Take advantage of the fact that our teaching labs are free and bring your classes for an hour or an entire day of activities including demonstrations and a hands-on chemistry lab in our newly-renovated facilities. If you like, coordinate with a colleague who teaches physics to bring a group of students for a mix of chemistry and physics activities.
