The Department of Medical Physics and Applied Radiation Sciences is a vibrant, research intensive department within the Faculty of Science. Due to a thriving academic community, the Department has grown dramatically in the last decade: more than doubling the faculty complement, and tripling the number of graduate students registered in Masters and PhD programs. The high quality of the graduate programs is globally acknowledged: our graduates hold faculty positions at universities over North America, and many graduates are members of the Canadian College of Physicists in Medicine (CCPM), and work in cancer centres and hospitals across the country.

The research in the Department is extremely inter- and multi-disciplinary, and researchers in the department have strong links to other departments in the Faculty of Science, other faculties within the University, hospitals in Hamilton and surrounding area, as well as many other Canadian and international universities. The Department also performs applied research and, as a result, has strong links to industrial partners with an interest in radiation sciences.

Many of our researchers are international leaders in their respective fields. The Department has access to a range of radiation facilities that is unique in Canada and has a range of research that would not be possible at other national centers.

There are many opportunities for research within the Department: the research is fascinating, challenging, and leading edge, and has the potential to radically impact people’s lives.
