Hearts and minds: SSRI antidepressants

Dee ManginMcMaster University - Family Medicine

Antidepressant use has been steadily rising since the introduction of the newer SSRI antidepressants. Much of this rise is due to people starting and staying on antidepressants long term. The proportion of the population in most developed countries taking antidepressants is now greater than one in ten. I will discuss issues around the broad and specific evidence for this level of antidepressant use, as well as presenting recent work on the unintended and longer term consequences, including discontinuation, developmental and sexual effects."
