Your classroom experiences can provide you with learning through assignments, experiments and textbooks. You can also gain real world, academically relevant experience through experiential education. This combination of academic and real world learning builds the qualities that employers look for. Enhance your employability skills by gaining experience while in school to compliment your academic studies.

Applied Science Placement

These courses are a great way to receive academic credit while gaining experience that is relevant to your program of study. Over the course of a semester, 60-120 hours of work will be completed at a placement of your choice. This opportunity provides insight into career options while combining academic and professional experience. 

SCIENCE 3RP3 RESEARCH PRACTICUM (3 units)

SCIENCE 3EP3 APPLIED SCIENCE PLACEMENT (3 units)

SCIENCE 3EX6 APPLIED SCIENCE PLACEMENT (6 units)

 

Eligibility & Application

  • Credit or registration in Science 2C00
  • Open to students in Level III or above in a program offered by the Faculty of Science
  • Submit a Permission Form (Science 3EP3/3EX6 or 3RP3) to the Associate Dean of Science Studies office two months prior to registration on SOLAR
  • Application requires permission from placement supervisor and an academic supervisor

Cooperative Education

The Science Cooperative Education Program is a great way to alternate your time in the classroom with academically relevant, paid work terms. Co-op provides an opportunity to gain experience in science-related careers and to make contacts in your field of study.

Science Industrial Internships

Are you looking to take a break from your studies while gaining valuable work experience? Perhaps an industrial internship is right for you!

An internship is a 12-16 month full-time, paid, academically relevant work placement in an industry setting. This opportunity will provide you with technical work experience that is relevant to your studies.

Science Career & Cooperative Education (SCCE) posts some internship positions on OSCARplus, but interested students should conduct a personalized job search to secure a position.

Eligibility & Application

  • Credit in Science 2C00
  • Open to full-time students in Level II or III of an Honours B.Sc. program
  • Students must have at least 24 units to complete upon return to studies

Career Field Experience

Gain work-related experience during Reading Week by participating in a Career Field Experience. Placements are normally 3 to 5 days in length, with the start and finish time determined by the employer. During the placement you will have the opportunity to meet with different staff members and/or departments to broaden your understanding of the career field.
