B. GIS Day – December 06, 2011.

Hosted by the School of Geography & Earth Sciences and the Centre for Spatial Analysis, this event fulfills part of the Ontario geography curriculum for grade 9, 11, and 12 students. The annual GIS Day assists in raising the visibility of the field of geomatics among high school students and their teachers. Local industry and government representatives speak on GIS applications in their workplace and students participate in various hands-on computer activities with ArcView, GPS, 3-D Lab Demos and Map Skills. C.On-site Field Trip:  As a new addition this year and in conjunction with McMaster Outdoor Club, the on-site field trips aim is to allow the students to apply any knowledge that they acquired in their Geography/Earth Sciences classes.  There will be an option of attending a trip to either SPENCER GORGE or COOTES PARADISE, where participants will learn about Hydrology, Geology, and much more.  The highly acclaimed McMaster Outdoors Club runs several trips throughout the year for post-secondary students, and are gracious enough this year to help coordinate hands-on field trips for secondary students as well. D. Labs: SGES funds and operates various unique labs with the state of the art research and technology. Following is a list of some of the labs offered:

E. Envirovision:  The School of Geography and Earth Sciences hosts an Environmental Film Festival every May, inviting high school students to experience a interactive, fun-filled event.  Graduate students and faculty from the School of Geography and Earth Sciences will lead interactive labs and activities in areas such as the Solar Lab, Environmental Geochemistry Lab, Centre for Climate Change Lab, 3D Visualization Lab and more.

This is a unique opportunity to showcase a set of recent environmental films and cutting edge university research to a large high school audience. This exposure will improve the knowledge of young students about current environmental issues and empower them to seek and create change for society's benefit. This event also increases the connectivity of high school students through a shared positive, academic experience.

B. Have a Graduate Student in the School of Geography and Earth Sciences Visit Your High School Classroom and Give a Presentation.

Students will learn in an informal setting first hand how science (whether it be biology, chemistry, or physics) can be applied to the physical environment. They will also learn about the numerous career opportunities associated with a B.Sc. in Earth and Environmental Science.
