Participating in campus career events is key to your job search, professional school application, career research and much much more. There are events all year long hosted by Science Career & Cooperative Education as well as by the Student Success Center that will benefit students in the Faculty of Science.

Why Should Science Students Attend the Fall Career Fair?

  • Explore current and future job opportunities
  • Learn about potential career paths
  • Meet one on one with a large number of employers all in one day
  • Gain valuable contacts for future career opportunities
  • While not all companies will be specifically targeting science students, this does not mean that you can't speak with these employers. Express your interest in the company for future possible opportunities. Inquire about positions for science educated students and how to apply.

How to Have a Successful Career Fair Day

  • Have your several copies of your updated resume ready to hand out Tip Sheet
  • Prepare answers for possible questions that employers may ask
  • Research attending companies
  • Prepare an elevator speech/introduction Tip Sheet
  • Dress for success

Company Information Sessions

A forum held on campus where companies promote their business, establish connections with interested students, pre-screen potential interviewees, and dispense information about employment opportunities and company operations. Check out OSCARplus to sign up for these great sessions.

What can I do to prepare for a company information session?

  • Bring a current copy of your resume! Tip Sheet
  • Prepare a 30-second elevator speech/introduction about yourself in advance Tip Sheet
  • Bring a note pad and pen to record important company details
  • Dress for Success - No jeans. Check the event information on OSCARplus for other specifications

If the company is not on campus looking for science students, why should you attend?

  • Company representatives are happy to meet any student who shows interest in their organization
  • Make sure you convey to the company representative that you are aware of their current target audience, but that you have interest in the company and wanted to attend regardless
  • Ask for assistance in getting your resume directed to the right person

Continuing Ed Fair

Are you thinking about pursuing graduate or further academic studies? Receive first hand information from program representatives at the annual Continuing Education Fair!

With the opportunity to meet with representatives from Teacher's Colleges, Graduate Study programs, Community Colleges and more, student have the chance to explore options for post-grad studies and discuss admission requirements and procedures.

Job Shadow

JOB SHADOW WEEK

Job Shadow Week provides students with valuable exposure to work environments, a better understanding of the demands of the working world, and information on the different career opportunities out there. By participating in job shadow week, students can identify career options that are a good fit for their future through observation and interviewing their Job Shadow Professional. Job Shadow professionals volunteer their time to meet with you for either a half day or a full day. This service is run by the Student Success Centre and more information can be found on their website.

TEACHER'S COLLEGE INFORMATION SESSION

Thinking about a career in teaching? In October, we welcome representatives from teacher education programs across Ontario and abroad to meet with McMaster students and discuss admissions requirements, accepted teachable areas, overseas certification and application deadlines.

Community Engagement and Volunteer Fair

The Community Engagement and Volunteer Fair is offered annually by the Faculty of Social Sciences, Experiential Education in partnership with Volunteer Hamilton and the Student Success Centre. At the fair, community agencies showcase their organizations and highlight opportunities for students who are interested in gaining volunteer experience.

The Fair is hosted in October in the McMaster University Student Centre. Attend this event and be exposed to the numerous opportunities and volunteer agencies within the City of Hamilton and surrounding areas.

Job Finding Boot Camp

Job Finding Boot Camp

McMaster’s Job Finding Boot Camp is for graduating students and new alumni who are ready to commit to a full time job search. Facilitated in a group setting and with the support of fellow job seekers and the assistance of our Career and Employment Staff you will engage in a 4 day intensive program designed to teach you the most effective means of finding work in the field in which you want to be employed.

The Boot Camp is open to 15 participants.  In order to be eligable for the Boot Camp you must have an employment goal and be:

  • Close to your graduation date or have graduated
  • Out of work
  • Ready to actively look for work
  • Available 9:30am – 2:30pm, Monday through Thursday during the week of Boot Camp
